Starting Small: Investing 101

Everything you need to place your first cedi, naira, or shilling into the market with confidence.
You do not need a lot of money to start investing. You need a small amount, a boring plan and enough patience to leave it alone.
Build the base first
Before investing a cedi, clear high-interest debt and set aside one month of expenses in an emergency fund. Investing while carrying loan-shark debt is running backwards.
Start with low-cost, diversified funds
A treasury bill, a money-market fund or a broad index fund spreads your money across many places at once. It is slower than a hot stock tip and far less likely to wipe you out.
Automate and ignore
Put in a fixed amount every month regardless of the headlines. The habit matters more than the timing, and checking the balance daily only tempts you to make expensive mistakes.
