Budgeting 101 for Gen-Z

A practical, no-nonsense breakdown of income, savings, and spending for young earners just starting out.

Your first salary or side-hustle income feels like freedom until the money is gone by the 20th of the month. Budgeting is not about restriction — it is about deciding where your money goes before it disappears.

Start with the 50/30/20 split

Send half of what you earn to needs (rent, transport, data, food), 30% to the things you actually want, and 20% straight into savings before you touch anything. On an irregular income, budget from your lowest typical month and treat the extra as a bonus.

Automate the boring part

Move your savings out of your spending account the day you get paid. Money you do not see is money you do not spend. A mobile-money locked savings wallet works just as well as a bank account here.

Track for 30 days, then adjust

Write down every cedi, naira or shilling that leaves your hands for one month. Most people find one or two silent leaks — daily data top-ups, delivery fees, "just this once" nights out — that quietly cost more than rent.
